3 Stars its an okay reel, 2009-05-15

Its much like the corvalus series with shimano. Casting is excellent. The only that sucks about this reel are the drag washers. When you hook a decent drag puller, these drags are sticky and jerky, even when their brand new. Yes, replace them with some carbon text washers, and then i would give this reel a 5.

I love this reel for jiggin on boats and throwing big hammers with 1 1/2 jigheads. You don't even need to thumb the spool and backlashes are a rare occasion. I use it for soaking live baits as well. the clicker could be a little louder...

4 Stars Great Baitcaster, 2005-04-01

I use my CV-X203a mostly for light inshore saltwater in Southern California. It's a great reel for throwing plastics and other small lures. Mine's loaded with 8# P-Line and I've caught everything from legal halibut to bass to bonito on it. It casts great and is solidly built with quality and precision. The screw-off sideplate with the mag-brake adjusment within is quite ingenious.

Because I use it in saltwater, regular maintenance is a must. Salt can definitely intrude into the sideplate and gearbox if you're not careful.

My only complaint would be the stock drag materials. Mine got a little sticky after less than a full season. I replaced them with Penn HT-100s in the Jigmaster (500) size and the drags have been flawless since.

good:
nicely priced. at only $50-60 depending on the size. workhorse reel. you can pretty much use and abuse this reel since its not very expensive to begin with, and it can take it.

bad:
not the best round baitcaster around, but good for its price. anti reverse could use a little more work. still has play. and it would be nice if the magnetic anti backlash system found in the smaller CV-X and Z reels was used in these also.

comments:
the 300 was my very first baitcaster. i used it for a little over a year before it was taken by a ray, along with my rod, over the railing of the pier i was fishing from. i also know a local fishing guide who uses these exclusively for both his clients and for personal use. if you are looking to start out with a baitcaster and want one that will do u well but not break the bank till you save up for a much better one, this is the one for you. i highly recommend this reel if it is within your price range.

4 Stars too bad it was discontinued, 2005-02-17

good:
probably the best anti backlash system in the business (253 and smaller). when you dial it in correctly, you can cast almost any lure a great distance only having to thumb the spool immediately before the lure hits the water. smooth cranking. great looks.

bad:
the drag can get a little sketchy if you forget to loosen it after a trip. and it never goes back to how it originally was unless you change out the drags altogher. the 300 size does not come with the same magnetic anti backlash system as the smaller models.

for those that got one of these reels before they were discontinued, consider yourselves lucky. these are great reels as long as you dont forget to loosen the drag after use and before storing it. retailed for about $150, but you might be able to find them in some stores on clearance for a lot less. i got my 253 for $75.

Great reel for tossing plastics. Mine actually has a huge dent on the right sideplate as I dropped it one evening, but the reel still works perfectly.
